How Long Does a Bottle of Diffuser Oil Last?
Short answer: how long a bottle of diffuser oil lasts depends on three things: how much oil your diffuser uses per hour, the intensity setting, and how many hours a day it runs. To estimate it, divide the bottle size in ml by the diffuser's oil consumption in ml per hour. That gives you the hours of diffusion in the bottle.
The simple formula
Bottle size (ml) ÷ oil consumption (ml per hour) = hours of diffusion
Then divide those hours by how many hours a day your diffuser actually diffuses to get the number of days.
Worked example: the P1000
The P1000 Professional Air Diffuser has a listed oil consumption of 1.1 ml per hour. Using that rate:
| Bottle size | Hours of diffusion | At 8 hours a day |
|---|---|---|
| 100 ml | about 91 hours | about 11 days |
| 250 ml | about 227 hours | about 28 days |
| 500 ml | about 454 hours | about 57 days |
These figures assume the diffuser uses oil at its full listed rate for every one of those hours. A lower intensity setting or longer pauses between bursts use less oil, so the same bottle can last longer.
Why the setting matters so much
Intensity makes a big difference. The Z1 Portable Air Diffuser, for example, lists an oil consumption of 0.05 to 0.6 g per hour depending on the setting. At its highest setting it uses about twelve times as much oil as at its lowest. If a bottle is running out faster than you'd like, turning the intensity down is the quickest fix.
What about Home Scenting Plans?
With a Home Scenting Plan, you don't need to calculate anything. Each plan includes a diffuser sized to your home and a monthly supply of fragrance oil, designed to last about one month at normal intensity settings.
How to make a bottle last longer
- Use a schedule. Run the diffuser only when you're home, or only during business hours.
- Start low. Begin on a low intensity and raise it only if you need to.
- Match the diffuser to the space. A diffuser that's too small for the room has to work at full intensity to be noticed. Our Diffuser Size Guide lists the coverage of every model.
- Place it well. A central spot with good air movement spreads the scent further. See where to place a scent diffuser.
- Keep the bottle capped when it's not attached to the diffuser, and store it away from heat and direct sun.
Which bottle size should you buy?
Tampa Scents diffuser oils come in 100 ml, 250 ml and 500 ml bottles. The 100 ml size is a good way to try a new scent. Once you've found one you love, the larger bottles cost less per ml and need refilling less often.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my oil running out faster than expected?
The most common reasons are a high intensity setting, running the diffuser all day, or a diffuser that's too small for the space and has to work harder. Lowering the intensity and using a schedule usually helps.
Does a larger diffuser use more oil?
Generally, yes. Diffusers built for larger areas push out more fragrance. Check the oil consumption listed in each product's specifications.
How do I find my diffuser's oil consumption?
Look at the technical specifications on the product page. Where the consumption is listed, you can use the formula above.
